Behaviour Therapy

Gentle, structured support helping children build positive behaviour, cope with big feelings and gain everyday skills.

Behaviour Therapy in Tirur

Every behaviour tells us something. A meltdown, a refusal or a habit that worries you is often a child's way of saying they are struggling. At Early Nest, behaviour therapy starts by understanding why a behaviour happens, rather than simply trying to stop it. We then use structured, evidence-based methods to teach new skills, so your child has better ways to communicate, cope and take part in family life.

Behaviour therapy at Early Nest supports children with autism, ADHD, developmental challenges, learning disabilities and everyday behavioural concerns. Sessions are calm, playful and planned around your child. We work closely with you as parents, because you know your child best and so much of a child's progress happens in everyday life at home. Where it helps, we also work with our speech therapist, special educator and wider team, so your child's goals support each other.

What we work on

Areas behaviour therapy can help with

  • Positive behaviour

Encouraging the behaviours we want to see more of, using praise, clear routines and small rewards, while gently reducing behaviours that make daily life hard.

  • Emotional regulation

Helping children notice big feelings like anger, frustration or worry, and learn simple ways to calm down and recover after a difficult moment.

  • Communication

Teaching children to ask for help, say no or show what they need in ways others understand, so fewer needs come out as challenging behaviour.

  • Social skills

Practising waiting, sharing, taking turns and playing alongside others, so children feel more confident with family, friends and classmates.

  • Daily-living skills

Building independence in everyday routines such as dressing, mealtimes, toileting and getting ready, broken into small, manageable steps and practised with you.

  • Parent guidance

Behaviour observation shared with you, psychoeducation (helping you understand why your child behaves a certain way) and counselling support, with practical strategies to use calmly at home.

Who it can help

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Behavioural difficulties
  • Developmental challenges
  • Learning disability

Signs your child may benefit

  • Frequent tantrums or meltdowns that seem bigger or longer than you would expect for their age.
  • Hitting, biting, throwing things or hurting themselves when upset.
  • Finding it very hard to sit, wait, follow simple instructions or stay with a task.
  • Strong upset when routines change or when moving from one activity to another.
  • Difficulty playing with other children, sharing or taking turns.
  • Needing a lot of help with everyday routines that other children their age manage more easily.

A general guide, not a diagnosis. If you are unsure, an assessment can bring clarity.

How it works

Behaviour Therapy at Early Nest

  1. Getting to know your child

We start by talking with you and observing your child in play, noting what happens before and after a behaviour to understand what it means for them.

  2. A plan built for your child

Together with you, we agree a few clear, realistic goals and an individualised plan, focusing first on what matters most to your family's daily life.

  3. Structured, playful sessions

Sessions use evidence-based behaviour methods in a warm, predictable setting, teaching new skills step by step and celebrating every small success along the way.

  4. Carrying it home

We share simple strategies you can use at home, review progress with you regularly and adjust the plan as your child grows and changes.

Benefits

What progress can look like

  • Over time, many children have fewer or shorter meltdowns as they learn other ways to cope.
  • Clearer ways for your child to show what they need.
  • More confidence in playing and getting along with others.
  • Greater independence in everyday routines.
  • Calmer daily routines at home, with strategies the whole family can use.
  • A better understanding of your child, without blame.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need a diagnosis to start behaviour therapy?

Not necessarily. Many families come to us simply because a behaviour is worrying them or making daily life hard. We begin by observing your child and listening to you. If we feel another assessment or therapy could help, we will talk it through with you openly.

Is behaviour therapy about punishing or controlling my child?

Not at all. Our approach is gentle and positive. We try to understand why a behaviour happens, then teach your child new skills to replace it. Praise, encouragement and clear routines are at the heart of what we do.

How involved will I be as a parent?

Very involved, if you can be. Parents are a key part of the plan. We explain what we are working on, show you practical strategies and offer counselling support, so the progress made in sessions carries over into home and school.

Can behaviour therapy be combined with other therapies?

Yes. Many children benefit from more than one kind of support. At Early Nest, behaviour therapy can work alongside speech therapy, special education and our other services, with the team sharing goals so everything fits together for your child.
