Speech Therapy

Helping children find their words, understand others and communicate with confidence.

Speech Therapy in Tirur

Every child has something to say. Some children need a little extra help to say it, or to understand what others are saying to them. Speech therapy at Early Nest supports children who are late to talk, hard to understand, or finding communication difficult. Each child's programme is built around their own needs, using evidence-based methods and plenty of play.

Our speech therapy also looks at the muscles of the mouth and face. Some children have trouble with chewing, swallowing or feeding, and this can be linked to how they speak. With training in orofacial myofunctional therapy (exercises for the mouth and face muscles), our therapist can support both. We work closely with parents, so the skills practised in sessions can carry on at home.

What we work on

Areas speech therapy can help with

  • Speech sounds and clarity

Helping your child form sounds and words more clearly, so family, friends and teachers can understand them more easily in everyday conversation.

  • Language understanding and use

Language intervention (focused work on understanding and using words) to help your child build vocabulary, follow instructions, join words into sentences and share needs and feelings.

  • Listening and auditory skills

Auditory training that helps children pay attention to sounds, recognise and tell them apart, and use what they hear to learn and respond.

  • Social communication

Building the skills for back-and-forth interaction, such as taking turns, responding when called, sharing attention and enjoying communication with others.

  • Oral-motor and feeding support

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (exercises for the mouth and face muscles) to strengthen and balance the lips, tongue and jaw, which may help with chewing, swallowing and feeding.

  • Confidence to communicate

Gentle, encouraging sessions that help children feel safe to try, so they communicate more freely at home, at school and with friends.

Who it can help

  • Speech and language delay
  • Communication challenges
  • Autism
  • Developmental delay
  • Feeding difficulties
  • Mouth and face muscle imbalance

Signs your child may benefit

  • Your child is saying fewer words than other children of a similar age, or has not started talking yet.
  • People outside the family often find it hard to understand what your child is saying.
  • Your child finds it difficult to follow simple instructions or understand what is said to them.
  • Your child seems to communicate mostly through pointing, pulling you by the hand or crying, rather than words.
  • Your child rarely responds when you call them, or shows little interest in back-and-forth play and sharing things with you.
  • Your child has ongoing trouble with chewing, swallowing or certain food textures, or often drools or keeps their mouth open when resting.

A general guide, not a diagnosis. If you are unsure, an assessment can bring clarity.

How it works

Speech Therapy at Early Nest

  1. Getting to know your child

We start with an assessment of your child's speech, language, listening and oral-motor skills, and we listen carefully to what you have noticed at home.

  2. A plan made for your child

Our therapist sets clear, individualised goals with you, choosing evidence-based methods that suit your child's needs, interests and stage of development.

  3. Therapy through play

Sessions use games, toys, songs and everyday activities, so children practise speaking, listening and oral-motor skills while they enjoy themselves and feel at ease.

  4. Working together as a team

We share simple ideas you can use at home and, where helpful, work alongside our other therapists so your child's goals support each other.

Questions parents ask

When should I think about speech therapy for my child?

If you have a concern about how your child talks, understands or communicates, it is worth asking. You do not need to wait for a diagnosis. Early support can make a real difference, and an assessment can help you understand whether your child needs therapy or just a little more time.

My child has autism. Can speech therapy help?

Yes, speech therapy can support many autistic children. Depending on your child, it may focus on understanding language, using words or other ways to communicate, listening skills and social communication such as turn-taking. Goals are always set around your child's own strengths and needs.

Why does a speech therapist help with feeding?

Speaking and eating use many of the same muscles in the lips, tongue and jaw. Our speech therapist is trained in orofacial myofunctional therapy, which works on the strength and balance of these muscles. This may help children who have difficulty chewing, swallowing or managing different foods.

How can I help my child at home?

You play a big part in your child's progress. Our therapist will share simple activities and tips you can fit into daily routines, like mealtimes, playtime and reading together. Talking with your child often, waiting for them to respond and praising their efforts all help.
